The previous owner doesn't know much about the history of my Karmann Ghia except that she bought it from some guy 3 years ago and that previous owner put in a 1971 engine. The numbers on the engine are consistent with a 1971 dual port engine. Further research on the VIN shows that the Ghia was probably built sometime in January 1969. I'd have to order a "birth certificate" from Germany to find out for sure and to see where the car was originally delivered.
When I bought the car, it came with blue plates and if this page on 15q.net is accurate, the plates were probably issued sometime in 1975. This probably means that my Karmann Ghia has been in California since at least 1975. It would be nice to know if my car had always been in the golden state.
